Castle Acre Priory BB57_00134
CASTLE ACRE PRIORY, PRIORY ROAD, CASTLE ACRE, KINGs LYNN AND WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK. View of the west front of the Castle Acre Priory, also known as the St Mary, St Peter and St Pauls Priory, from inside the ruins.
A view of the west front of the priory from inside the ruins. In the centre of the west front is a huge equilateral arch that possibly had trefoil decoration in the light. Below this is an entrance with a rounded arch at the outer wall, and a basket handle shape at the inner wall. Under this is a figure against a fence that spans the entrance. To the left is a tower three storeys high with two windows at the top and one in the middle section. Further left is the roof of the Priors Lodging, a 12th century lodging altered in the 15th and 16th centuries. The priory is a 12th century Clunaic Benedictine Priory founded in 1090 by William de Warrene, second Earl of Surrey. The site is currently looked after by English Heritage
