Red Lion Wharf, Gravesend, Kent. Laing workers pouring concrete for the walls of the cooling water intake caisson during the first phase of its construction for Coryton Oil Refinery, Thurrock, Essex.
On 30th November 1951, the cooling water intake caisson for Coryton Oil Refinery was moved across the Thames from the dry dock at the Red Lion Wharf, Gravesend, to Tilbury Docks. The removal of the caisson from Gravesend to Tilbury marked the completion of the first stages in the units construction. The structure was towed with shuttering fixed, ready for continuation of concreting at Tilbury
