SMITHFIELD MARKET, London. Aerial view. The Metropolitan Meat and Poultry Market was built in 1868, although there has been a meat market near here since the Middle Ages. It was designed by the City architect Horace Jones and based on the Crystal Palace. Part of the building was burnt down in 1958 and replaced in 1963
