Machine gun troop BL24191_008
British cavalrymen from the 1st Life Guards with a Madsen Machine Rifle. A mounted soldier keeps the horses in the background. During the latter stages of the First World War British cavalry were expected to rapidly exploit break-throughs beyond enemy trench lines. They were equipped with light machine guns that could be deployed quickly. Battenberg princes at Osborne House D880027a
OSBORNE HOUSE, Isle of Wight. The Ryde Album. Princes Alexander (1886-1960) and Prince Maurice (1891-1914) of Battenberg, grandchildren of Queen Victoria and sons of Prince Henry and Princess Beatrice. Prince Maurice was killed at Ypres in the First World War. In 1917, in response to anti-German sentiment during the War, Prince Alexander renounced his princely title to become Alexander Mountbatten, 1st Marquess of Carisbrooke. Here the two boys are shown at Osborne House - harnessed to their pony cart are Shetland ponies Tommy and Nellie
