APSLEY HOUSE, London. " Spencer Perceval" (1762-1812) by George Francis JOSEPH (1764-1846) Prime Minister 1809 until his assassination. WM 1558-1948. Spencer Perceval was second son of the Earl of Egmont. A successful barrister, he entered Parliament in 1796, became Solicitor General in 1801, Attorney General in 1802, Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1807 and Prime Minister in 1809. On 11 May 1812 he was assassinated in the House of Commons by John Bellingham, a " man of disordered mind". This painting was made from a death-mask taken by Joseph Nollekens, and is one of several made after Percevals death. The National Portrait Gallery has another version
