Lanercost Priory a62_07234
LANERCOST PRIORY, LANERCOST, BURTHOLME, CARLISLE, CUMBRIA. View of the ruins of Lanercost Priory, most likely the south side of the priory, including part of St Marys Church, the former priory nave.
Exterior view of the ruins of Lanercost Priory, most likely of the south side. The right side of the image shows a three storey section of the old priory, possibly the south transept, which has a small round arch entrance on the west side in the corner, and a triangle shape above the second storey on the south facing side. To the right is the nave of the priory, which is still used as the parish church, St Marys Church. The full height of the former nave can be seen, with the tiled roof intact. In the background is the remains of a tower and in the foreground a raised path of grass can be seen, bordered by a small stone wall that follows the shape of the outer walls. The priory was founded by the Augustine order and was visited on a few occasions by Edward I, including in 1306-07 when he was taken ill and stayed for six months. Lanercost Priory was dissolved in 1537 during the reign of Henry VIII, and was given to Sir Thomas Dacre. The site is currently cared for by English Heritage
