Crac des Chevaliers, or Hosn al Akrad, Syria. The earlier fort was given to the Knights Hospitallers in 1142 and became their main military base for over a century. THe fortress was eventually captured by the Mamluk Sultan Baibars in 1271. Photographed by Aerofilms Ltd; date uncertain, probably 1950s. Designated as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006
