Old bridge and Aqueduct OFH01_01_01_f02_01
Old Putney Bridge, Putney, Wandsworth, Greater London. The view from St Mary's Church tower in Putney looking across Thames towards Fulham with pedestrians on the old Putney Bridge to the right and the aqueduct crossing to the left.
Putney Bridge, also known as Fulham Bridge, dated from 1729. It was badly damaged by a river barge in 1870. Despite repairs, its days were numbered and in 1880 work began on a replacement. Shortly after completion of the new crossing in 1886, the old bridge, seen here, was demolished. The new bridge followed the line of the aqueduct seen to the left.
The photographer, William Field said of this view: "This was a pretty view one had from St Mary's Tower unique in its colour and quaintness. The curve of the old bridge as it enters Puteny High Street can be seen and was respectively regarded by coach drivers. There used to be very good dace fishing round the piers."The view from St Mary's Church tower in Putney looking across Thames towards Fulham with pedestrians on the old Putney Bridge to the right and the aqueduct crossing to the left
