WOOD GREEN SHOPPING CITY, HARINGEY, GREATER LONDON. A view of the Mayes Road entrance to the Market Hall at Wood Green Shopping City, with the spiral ramps of the west car park rising above.
Wood Green Shopping City, later renamed The Mall Wood Green, is a large shopping centre and housing complex. The site has a unique design, with the A105 (High Road) running through its centre, and a housing complex known as Sky City built on top of the shop units. Laing's London Region were responsible for the construction of various sections of the site in the 1970s to early 1980s. The most notable of these contracts was the Phase II contract, which included the main shopping centre to the west of the A105

WESTWAY FLYOVER, A40, KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA, GREATER LONDON. Michael Heseltine and a group of journalists at the opening of the Westway Flyover, with a protest banner draped in the background.
Michael Heseltine was Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport at the time and deputised for the Minister John Peyton to cut the tape for the opening of the Westway Flyover. Acklam Road was the focus of protests against the Westway by local residents. Houses along one side of the street had been demolished to make way for the flyover and at a reception held earlier that day at the Lord's Tavern, George Clark, leader of the residents social rights committee, had presented their objections to the Minister of Transport and representatives from the Greater London Council. The photograph shows a banner that reads Get us out of this hell rehouse us now draped from the parapet of houses on Acklam Road. By September, the GLC had promised the residents that they would be rehoused. The photograph was taken near grid reference TQ2463581685

Workers celebration JLP01_08_085062

WESTWAY FLYOVER, A40, KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA, GREATER LONDON. A crowd of workers celebrating the opening of the Westway Flyover, seen from the high level section over the junction with the West Cross Route.
Work on site for the Western Avenue Extension began on 1st September 1966, and the Westway as it became known was officially opened on 28th July 1970. The elevated highway connecting the A40 at White City to Marylebone Road in Paddington, at around 2 ½ miles, was the longest in Europe. Consulting engineers G Maunsell & Partners designed the road project for the Greater London Council and John Laing & Son undertook the construction. It was organised into six sections. Sections 1, 4, 5 & 6 formed the main flyover into central London with Sections 2 & 3 being the West Cross Route, running south from the junction in Section 1 near Latimer Road to Shepherds Bush. The management offices for Sections 4 and 5 were located in Torquay Street. This photograph was taken at grid reference TQ2357681100. It appeared in the September 1970 issue of Team Spirit, the Laing company newsletter
