Topping out JLP01_09_781093
THE SHOPPING CENTRE, SILBURY BOULEVARD, MILTON KEYNES. The last load of concrete being shovelled on the roof of the John Lewis store restaurant during the construction of the shopping centre in Milton Keynes.
Rather than a symbolic shovelful of concrete or the placing of a single tile like at most topping out ceremonies, members of the project management team were invited to help with the final 37 cubic metres of concrete. A total of 70, 000 cubic metres of concrete were used in the whole shopping centre complex.
This photograph was used in the June 1978 issue of Team Spirit, the Laing company newsletter. It shows S Green, Project Manager for Milton Keynes Development Corporation assisted by R Corkery
