Worlds first hydrogen balloon CVS01_01_010

Tales of balloon flight. This unmanned balloon, Le Globe was launched by Jacques Charles and the Robert brothers on the Champ de Mars, Paris, on 27th August 1783, landing in Gonnesse after a forty-five minute flight, where it terrified local peasants who destroyed the balloon. Hand-coloured engraving shows peasants attacking the balloon. From the Cecil Victor Shadbolt collection of lantern slides dating from 1882-1892

The Strand 21760_11

The Strand and The Embankment, Westminster, London. In the centre of this aerial photograph is Shell-Mex House, part of which was once the Cecil Hotel, the largest hotel in Europe when it opened on 1886. Today the Strand has three theatres: The Savoy, The Adelphi and the Vaudeville: in the 1890s it contained more theatres than other street in London. The street has housed many public houses and coffee shops since the 17th century and has attracted a wide range of people over the years from writers and actors, to pickpockets and prostitutes. Photographed in August 2002

Kits Coty House under the Act AL2400/033/02 Featured Print

Kits Coty House under the Act AL2400/033/02

Kit's Coty House, Aylesford, Kent. Attributed to Flaxman Charles John Spurrell (1842-1915). Silver gelatin DOP (developing out paper) print 1888. Flaxman Spurrell's photograph album contains two photographs of Kit's Coty House, the remains of a Neolithic long barrow and burial chamber. The first one, taken in 1880, shows the monument before the Ancient Monuments Protection Act in 1882 that recognised the need for a Government role in safeguarding the nation's ancient monuments. The second, which Spurrell captioned Kita's Coty under The Act, was taken in 1888 and clearly shows the iron railings which now restricted public access and prevented further damage to the monument. Graffiti scratched into an upright and worn ground around the monument are evident in Spurrell's photographs
