WALMER CASTLE AND GARDENS, Kent. View of the castle from the beach. The Castle commands approaches to the busy anchorage of The Downs. The shingle beach provides a clear line of fire from its gun ports. Walmer is official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. The chambers on the upper floors have been repeatedly altered to reflect the requirements of successive Lord Wardens

CAMBER CASTLE, Winchelsea, Rye, East Sussex. Camber Castle was built on the low-lying coastal dunes in around 1540 as part of Henry VIII's defensive scheme to counter invasion from the French and Spanish. It is now in the care of English Heritage. Photographed by Eric de Mare between 1945 and 1980
