NETLEY ABBEY, Netley, Hampshire. Ivy covering the abbey frames a window in the day room. Founded in the 13th century, Netley is the most complete surviving Cistercian monastery in southern England. Even in ruins, the abbey continued to be influential, inspiring Romantic writers and poets. It is now in the care of English Heritage. Photographed in 1890Â by Henry Taunt
