FINMERE STATION, Oxfordshire. The Great Central Railway Company built this station on the line from Sheffield through Nottingham and Leicester to London in 1898-9. A new Great Central Railway terminus was built at Marylebone. Behind these porters are posters advertising tickets for trips to London. These journeys would be unthinkable for most people before the coming of the railways. Photographed by Alfred Newton and Son in 1904

BUTLER'S WHARF, Shad Thames, London. Crates of goods wrapped in straw for protection are unloaded in London and set on the conveyor belt to the warehouses. The small hut in the centre of the picture is probably where the overseer kept records of the cargo. From the Butlers Wharf Collection: some time before 1910 the Directors of Butlers Wharf Ltd, commissioned a series of photographs detailing aspects of the company's work

GRIMSBY DOCKS, Lincolnshire. Aerial view, August 1933. This view shows Alexandra Dock, with the Victoria Mills, a moored sailing barge and Corporation Bridge to the right. Central Market and the clock tower are also visible. Lighters lie alongside the timber yard. Alexandra Dock was one of several expansions to Grimsby Docks to accommodate the extensive fishing fleet.
