M6 Motorway, M6, Grayrigg, South Lakeland, Cumbria. A view of the construction of the M6 Motorway through the Lune Gorge, showing two men in a truck-mounted hydraulic lifting platform, working against a rock face to the south of Low Borrowbridge.
The work on the Lune Gorge section of the M6 Motorway between Killington and Tebay (Junction 37 - Junction 38) was carried out by John Laing Construction Ltd. Work started in October 1967 and the motorway was opened to traffic in October 1970. On this section of motorway, the cliffs of rock were drilled, blasted and then rock bolted for stability
