Floating Dock EPW020452

Aerial view of floating dock, Southampton, Hampshire. Photographed by Aerofilms, 16th March 1928.
This oblique aerial photograph shows the floating dry dock at Southampton in March 1928. To allow a ship to enter, the dock was partially submerged by filling ballast tanks with water. The ship was towed into the dock and the tanks pumped out, raising the ship out of the water. The ship's exposed hull could then be accessed for repairs and renovation. The floating dry dock was moved to Portsmouth in 1940
