Cerne Abbas Giant 26127_047
CERNE ABBAS GIANT, Dorset, in the care of the National Trust. Aerial view. The giants origin is uncertain, although one theory is that he was cut to represent " Englands Hercules", as a parody of Oliver Cromwell. The rectangular earthwork above the giant is known as the Trendle, an Iron Age enclosure possibly for a farmstead. In the 19th century the earthwork was traditionally used as the setting for a Maypole
