Ripon Minster UXC01_01_01_1424_18
Ripon Minster, Minster Close, Ripon, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, 1955-1980. An exterior view of Ripon Minster, or St Peter and St Wilfrid's Cathedral Church, showing the south aisle and transept.
Ripon Minster originated as Scottish monstery reorganised by St Wilfrid c660. It was refounded as a College of secular canons 1060-1069 and again in 1604 by James I. It was dissolved during the Commonwealth (1649-1660) and re-founded in 1660. In 1836 Ripon became a diocese and the College was replaced by a Dean and Chapter and the church became a cathedral. Due to it's history, there is some medieval material remaining, but most of the cathedral dates to the 19th century alterations made.
The cathedral has two towers on the west front, at the north and south corners, an aisled nave. The aisles were added in the early 16th century, and the east clerestory in the south transept is probably of a similar date. The south aisle has stepped buttresses between each bay and an embattled parapet, and the south transept has square pilasters between each bay, with pyramidal caps at the corners, and a gabled south elevation. The spire of the crossing tower collapsed in 1615 and was never replaced
