Little Stoke Ferry CC72_01022

CHOLSEY, Oxfordshire. The low flat ferry boat awaits the corn wagons that used to cross the River Thames at this point. There is also a passenger ferry moored alongside to transport people between Cholsey and Littlestoke. In the distance is the huge Berkshire County Lunatic Asylum at Moulsford, built in 1870. It is now known as Fair Mile Hospital. Photographed in 1890 by Henry Taunt

HMS Wishart AA002466

HMS WISHART, Hays Wharf, Bermondsey, London. A Thorneycroft modifed W class destroyer launched in 1919, here bedecked in celebratory bunting. During the Second World War she served in the Mediterranean fleet, including acting as escort to the Malta convoys. She was decommissioned and broken up in 1945. Photographed here bys W Rawlings in April 1937 - On 27th April she was Guardship at Greenwich for the opening of the National Maritime Museum by King George VI

Brodsworth Main Colliery EPW012843

BRODSWORTH MAIN COLLIERY, Adwick-le-Street, South Yorkshire. Aerial photograph taken in May 1925. The Colliery was opened in 1905 and closed in 1990. The radial housing estate that can be seen at the top of the picture is part of the model village of Woodlands that was originally built for the colliery workers. This picture clearly shows railway sidings and coal trucks as well as a wide variety of pit head structures. Taken from a copy negative. Aerofilms Collection (see Links)
