BLACK GATE, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear. The New Castle at Newcastle upon Tyne was founded by the Normans to command a crossing of the River Tyne. The Keep was built in 1168-1178, while the Black Gate (a gateway into the barbican) dates from 1247. Photographed in 1864 by George Price Boyce
