WD AND HO WILLS, WHITCHURCH LANE, CITY OF BRISTOL. The management team for the Wills tobacco factory construction at Hartcliffe, Bristol, scrutinising site plans.
The Hartcliffe project was Laings Building Divisions first management contract, a new venture in the companys construction policy. The Laing labour force was not used, instead the various aspects of construction at the site were subcontracted to other companies. Blackwells undertook the earth works and landscaping, Wimpey the foundations, roads and sewers, McAlpine built the main concrete structures and Bolton and Paul the steelwork whilst Drake and Scull were responsible for the building services installation. The Laing management team coordinated the different aspects of construction and liaised with the architects and engineers to deliver the £ 15m contract
