RAF English Electric Lightning F1 flying over the sea in 1968. The Lightning served with the RAF as a fighter or interceptor between 1959 and 1988. Faster and more agile even than many of todays fighter aircraft, its low range and limited payload for armament reduced its usefulness in relation to more recent competitors.
