Battenberg princes at Osborne House D880027a
OSBORNE HOUSE, Isle of Wight. The Ryde Album. Princes Alexander (1886-1960) and Prince Maurice (1891-1914) of Battenberg, grandchildren of Queen Victoria and sons of Prince Henry and Princess Beatrice. Prince Maurice was killed at Ypres in the First World War. In 1917, in response to anti-German sentiment during the War, Prince Alexander renounced his princely title to become Alexander Mountbatten, 1st Marquess of Carisbrooke. Here the two boys are shown at Osborne House - harnessed to their pony cart are Shetland ponies Tommy.
